Tackling the Cycle of Poverty: Supporting Dads, Strengthening Families
At Dads Rock, our core belief is simple: children thrive when dads thrive.
Since 2012, we have been working with families across Scotland. Our experience in these communities shows us that the cost of living crisis for many of them is a daily reality that puts immense pressure on homes. When families face financial hardship, it impacts mental health, relationship stability, and children's future prospects.
We are here to be part of the solution. By providing a dedicated, father-inclusive entry point to support, we help break the cycle of child poverty and build long-term family resilience.
Why Involving Dads Targets Child Poverty
Poverty adversely effects the health and wellbeing of babies and children. It limits their educational attainment and restricts their life chances. To break this repeating cycle, families need emotional, practical, and financial support, offered by people and in spaces they genuinely trust.
We know from our collaborative work with the Poverty Alliance that Scotland is stuck in a crisis response. Political and professional systems can become distracted by short-term needs, overwhelmed by the scale of change required. We need real, systemic change - and involving fathers is a vital, underused lever to achieve it.
With 89% of men becoming fathers, we champion the vital, equal role of dads to ensure every child benefits from the better life outcomes that active, dual-parent involvement provides. Father-inclusive support is not a niche requirement; it is a fundamental necessity for long-term family wellbeing.
While statutory services are increasingly moving toward Whole Family Support, many fathers still report feeling sidelined by traditional, maternity-led services. When a dad is left out of the picture, a primary pillar of the family's support network goes underutilised. Our work changes this dynamic by providing a trusted, non-judgmental space for men who might otherwise avoid asking for help. By connecting them to mental health support, parenting advice, and financial guidance early, we intervene before a household reaches a breaking point.

How We Support Families Out of Poverty: Tailored One-to-One Care
Our experience has shown us that every man has entirely different skills, strengths, and needs. Poverty and financial hardship affect every household differently, which is why we do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. For families referred to our service, we provide vital, intensive one-to-one support that is tailored completely to the individual.
First, our Dads Workers take the time to genuinely get to know the man and his unique situation. Together, we develop a personalised programme designed to build his confidence, resilience, and practical skills. Depending on what a family needs most to achieve stability, our one-to-one work focuses on critical, everyday areas including:
Health and Wellbeing: Practical guidance on looking after their own physical and mental health under pressure.
Child Development and Nutrition: Developing confidence in feeding babies and young children, looking after toddlers, and understanding how and why to play with their children to boost early learning.
Financial Capability: Hands-on economic management, household budgeting, and reducing financial stress.
Life and Family Skills: Building the routines to be an organised dad and learning exactly how and where to seek help when challenges arise.
For many fathers, navigating parenthood alongside financial hardship represents an enormous, overwhelming change in their lives, and we are there to help them cope. For others who already have these foundations, we offer targeted help in other ways to protect the household. By meeting men exactly where they are, we give them the practical tools to steer their families out of crisis and toward a more secure future.
Whole Family Support
Tackling child poverty requires a genuine Whole Family Support approach, recognising that a household's financial and emotional resilience relies on all its moving parts. When we invest in a father's economic management, practical skills, and confidence, we are directly relieving the immense pressure frequently placed on mums, who often bear the primary burden of managing poverty. Empowering dads to manage tight budgets, access resources, and build household stability creates a stronger, dual-parent safety net. This collaborative dynamic reduces parental conflict, protects maternal wellbeing, and ensures that resources and security are amplified for the children.
Our Impact: Evidence from our 2026 Survey
We don’t just believe our model works; our data proves it. Supported previously by investments like the Scottish Government’s Whole Family Wellbeing Fund and the Child Poverty Practice Accelerator Fund, we closely measure the direct "preventative dividend" of our support.
Our latest 2026 Impact Survey shows exactly how we are helping families navigate the current economic climate:
Mitigating the Cost of Living Crisis: An overwhelming 93% of fathers agreed that Dads Rock helps to alleviate the stress of the cost of living crisis, proving our role as a vital buffer during times of severe financial strain.
Financial Resilience: Following our interventions, 74% of fathers felt more capable of managing family stresses and financial pressures.
Mental Health Boost: 85% of fathers reported a significant improvement in their mental health and wellbeing. A supported dad means a more stable, secure home environment for his children.
Parenting Confidence: 92% of fathers stated they felt more confident in their parenting role, ensuring they remain a positive, consistent presence in their children's lives.
Breaking Isolation: 78% of fathers reported that Dads Rock successfully reduced their feelings of social isolation, providing an early-warning system for households in distress.
Supporting High-Risk Homes: 30% of the families we currently support have a child on the Child Protection Register. Fathers in these high-risk groups view our service as uniquely "for them," allowing us to achieve high engagement rates where traditional services often struggle.
