top 5 things to do in East ayrshire

East ayrshire is on the west coast of scotland, with plenty of free activities to do. Ryan, who is supporting Dads across Ayrshire recommends these things to do with your family and little ones in the area

1. Dean Castle Country Park (Kilmarnock)

This is arguably the crown jewel of family days out in the area, and best of all, it’s free to enter. The Highlights: It features a brilliant adventure playground specifically designed to blend into the woodland, complete with multi-level climbing areas and long slides. For the Little Ones: There is a fantastic urban farm where kids can get up close to donkeys, llamas, Highland cows, and smaller animals.  Top Tip: The paths are very pram-friendly, and there’s a lovely visitor centre café to grab a coffee while the kids burn off energy.

While the stunning 18th-century stately home is famous worldwide, the surrounding estate is an absolute paradise for young families. The Highlights: The estate boasts the Engineering Centre playground and a massive wooden adventure play area. There is also a brilliant maze (with a central tower to climb) and a dedicated Education Farm where little ones can see rare-breed animals up close. For the Little Ones: The Harmony Garden features outdoor musical instruments that toddlers love to smash and play with. Top Tip: Check out their calendar before you go—they often host family-friendly events and fairy trail walks throughout the year.

If the classic Scottish weather takes a turn for the worse, the Galleon Centre is the ultimate local indoor backup plan. The Highlights: It features a great multi-pool swimming setup, including a toddler pool with warmer water and gentle water features to get little ones confident in the pool. For the Little Ones: They also host dedicated soft play sessions and ice-skating slots where you can hire fun penguin skate-aids for young kids trying out the ice for the first time.

Sitting right on the border of East Ayrshire, Whitelee is the UK's largest onshore wind farm and acts as a giant outdoor playground.  The Highlights: Standing directly underneath the massive, sweeping wind turbines is an incredible sensory experience for kids. The visitor centre is completely free and features hands-on, interactive science exhibits where children can learn how electricity is made by pushing buttons and turning cranks. For the Little Ones: Right outside the visitor centre is a great, enclosed wooden play park. The vast network of tracks is completely traffic-free and perfectly flat, making it ideal for toddlers on balance bikes or families pushing prams.

5. The Garage Leisure Complex (Kilmarnock)

Another fantastic rainy-day saviour, The Garage is an all-in-one indoor entertainment hub that caters beautifully to younger children. The Highlights: It houses Bearspaw Soft Play, a dedicated, multi-level soft play arena where toddlers can safely scramble, slide, and dive into ball pools. For the Little Ones: They have full ten-pin bowling lanes equipped with heavy-duty ramps and lane bumpers so that even the youngest kids can successfully roll the ball down and score a strike.
