From Nappies to Fire Hoses: Andy’s First Six Months as a Family Worker at Dads Rock

Andy McLean - Dads Rock Family Worker in Glasgow

At Dads Rock, we envision a world where every child grows up with the best possible version of their family—so we’re all about being authentic, empowering, inclusive and creating lasting change. Over the past half-year, our new family worker in Glasgow has been on a proper dadventure around Glasgow, supporting dads to step up, have fun and feel supported every step of the way. Here’s Andy’s update on what it’s been like joining #TeamDadsRock!

🎧 A Listening Ear (and a Few cups of coffee!)

Becoming a dad can be a whirlwind, especially when you’re still finding your feet. That’s why our young dads service is a game-changer. Andy has six years’ experience as a therapeutic counsellor and has used these skills several times since starting which have led to greater contact and more stable dads.

And it’s not just one-to-one chats—our Glasgow dads WhatsApp group has over 200 dads sharing everything from weaning tips to epic family-day hacks. Topics have covered allergies, lunches/pee breaks at nursery schools, access rights, how to get into meditation, baby giveaways (just the accessories, not the babies), links to family days out and so on. It’s peer support with a side of banter, all in one cosy online corner.

🗺️ Signposting Like a Local Legend

Glasgow’s bustling services can feel like a maze—so Andy’s local know-how and existing contacts at various third sector organisations is a huge help. He’s been getting out and about to introduce himself to some new organisations as well, like Men Matter in Drumchapel, Andy’s Man Club, Shared Parent Network, Home-Start , Action for children and Parkhead Hub (Glasgow HSPC).

Andy can draw on these connections and help dads to get exactly what they need whilst supporting them as their friendly guide throughout. Continuity means trust, and it means dads can focus on bonding with their little ones, not repeatedly explaining their life histories or restating the help they feel is needed.

⚖️ Legal Tips Without the Mumbo-Jumbo

Ideally, no one ends up in court—but sometimes it happens. Andy’s legal qualifications mean he can explain custody, contact and every bit of jargon in plain English. No-one likes stress, and by clarifying next steps, he takes a ton of worry off young dads’ shoulders—so they can concentrate on what really matters: quality time with their kids.

Prospective dads address their number one fear - the nappy!

🧸 Playgroups, Workshops & Wild Trips

Our Saturday playgroup has re-started at our central Glasgow hub in Maryhill and it’s buzzing! Think toys, books, musical instruments, coffee for dads, healthy snacks for weens, and we sometimes go on trips too. We’ve already checked out the local fire station, and we’re planning a Father’s Day meerkat meet-and-greet in June. The dads talk of how much they value the group as “everything is for women!” There is a level of bonhomie between regulars and newcomers are given a very warm welcome from all (and at no charge to the dads).

In-person antenatal classes have taken place or have been booked. Many have felt simply being in the company of other expectant first-time dads on its own has been very helpful and has reduced feelings of apprehension and isolation as the big day rolls nearer. Those attending are welcome to join our WhatsApp community to stay in touch with other new dads and get great peer support from all our members.

💪 Building Emotional Muscle, Together

Fatherhood isn’t just about DIY and nappies—it’s about emotional availability. Men often face stigma around mental health, and old-school “tough guy” coping can backfire on the whole family. At Dads Rock, we encourage open chats face-to-face, online or via recommended podcasts and books—so dads can spot their triggers, adopt healthier outlets and rock their role as loving, trusted parents.

Andy’s first six months have been a whirlwind of high-fives, heartfelt chats and proper dadventures. By staying true to our values—authenticity, empowerment, inclusivity and creating lasting change—Dads Rock is helping shape a future where every child really does grow up with the best version of their family. And that’s worth celebrating!
